MathsOp
The world’s first digital maths workbook app! It was created to make the lives of primary school students and their teachers easier by breaking down the basic mathematical operations visually, and analyzing student learning patterns using artificial intelligence!
How it works:
MathsOP takes away all the stress from a teacher so that they don’t have to manually correct the entire classroom’s homeworks and exams. It is a tool to be used by schools in parallel with their curriculum and can be used to assign homework and classwork with a simple click of a button.
It focuses on the process of the 4 key mathematical operations and initially guides students through them. It fosters students' confidence in their own mathematical abilities and allows for self-assessment at the click of a button.
MathsOp examines every student’s step-by-step solution and uses artificial intelligence to notice patterns in a classroom’s common mistakes, giving feedback to the teacher advising them on what to stress on for each classroom.
For teachers, MathsOp is an essential tool which removes the time-consuming correction process of teaching maths and brings the teacher straight to the review of their students’ work. At a glance, teachers can see the precise location of any computational errors for any of their students. MathsOp will identify error trends within a whole class which can then help in structuring the next aspect of the teacher's instruction.
Challenges
One of the biggest challenges faced in this project was accommodating the many different ways students perform steps. The user interface needed to be intuitive enough for primary school students to zip through and use to solve their maths assignments with ease.
The Process
To tackle the challenges mentioned, an auto-navigation algorithm was implemented which directs the students on where to go next and how best to tidy up their calculations. This of course will later be disabled by the teacher to force students to manually input the digits where they belong.
Moreover, tools to mimic an actual workbook were added to mimic the feeling of performing all the scratch work, such as scratching out a number when borrowing from the tens digit and replacing it with another.
Result
The creation of MathsOp has led to a more streamlined teacher-student experience and has facilitated the management of many primary school students’ homework management.
Future Outcomes
Eventually, MathsOp will be able to provide access for all students to any numeracy curriculum with its student and teacher-led content. MathsOp will aim to include all book questions and exercises in its database to simplify the process of assigning work even further.
