Little Red Edu

Technology used : Unity 3D, C#, Vuforia AR, Artificial Intelligence, SoapBox Labs

Little Red is an educational tool that teaches English as a second language to 3-6 year old learners. It can accurately track the progress of each student’s pronunciation, helping them progress with their English.

How it works

Little Red leads the student through an assortment of enjoyable videos and mini-games, highlighting the correct pronunciation of words and honing the skill to recognize their meanings or icons. Here's a glimpse of what that looks like:

Finally, after completing the mini-games the student’s knowledge is put to the test! They are prompted to pronounce the words corresponding to the shown icons. A precise pronunciation earns them a golden acorn, while errors in a single phonetic segment result in a silver acorn. Multiple mistakes lead to a bronze acorn.

Challenges

One of the principal challenges encountered during the development of this project revolved around the need to tailor the difficulty level to suit the age group of 3-6 year old learners. We had to strike the delicate balance between making the content engaging and enjoyable while ensuring it remains informative and educational.

A significant hurdle encountered in this project was customizing the difficulty level for learners aged 3-6, striking a balance between fun and educational content. To address this, educational experts crafted the learning material based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Additionally, we collaborated with a research organization, engaging 10 families in playtesting the games and offering valuable feedback.

The Process

In response to this challenge, our educational expert meticulously designed the learning content, drawing upon the guidelines provided by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. This strategic approach aimed to create a curriculum that not only caters to the specific needs of young learners but also aligns with established educational frameworks, ensuring a robust foundation for language learning.

To further validate and enhance our approach, we established a partnership with a reputable research organization. This collaboration involved enlisting 10 families to actively participate in playtesting the games. By involving families in the testing phase, we aimed to gain valuable insights and feedback on how well the content resonates with the target audience. This feedback loop not only helped us refine the difficulty levels but also provided essential information on the overall user experience, ensuring that the educational tool is not only instructive but also captivating for young learners.

We first created a Prototype for the trial users to playtest and then amended it based on their feedback. Here is a preview of how that looked like:

Result

The development of Little Red Edu has allowed users to independently learn English as a second language, incorporating a learn-through-play approach.

Future Outcomes

In upcoming iterations of Little Red, students and their parents will receive visual representations illustrating the phonetic breakdown of each word the child is acquiring. This feature aims to assist in identifying specific areas for improvement and pinpointing the pronunciation aspects that require attention.
